Roundtable of Sustainable Industries

Objectives:

• An intellectual forum to debate issues related to sustainable industrial development in NWFP provide guidance, input, and recommendation for promoting sustainable development in the province.
• To debate sectoral issues and identifying interventions for Government private sector for sustainable development in industrial sector
• To provide an interface between Government and private sector for consensus building in industrial development

Major Achievements:

• Establishment of NWFP National Cleaner Production Center at Mineral Testing Laboratory, Peshawar
• Linkages and interface between research institutes and Industrial Community e.g. PCIR Laboratories, UNIDO NCPC and Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry
• Awareness raising on emerging international and national standards and environment protection measures e.g. briefing on WTO and SMART for Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mardan Chamber of Commerce and Industry
• Interface of public sector organizations and research institution on environmental management and protection measures e.g. Mineral Testing Laboratories Peshawar accreditation for ISO 17025 by UNIDO South Asia Program, PCSIR recent research on environmental problems of automobile service station and auto repair shops.
  

Constraints:

• Low participation and interest of Private and Commercial Sector in RT meetings
• Lack of mechanism between sectoral issues and policy formulation at Provincial level
  

Way-ahead:

• Establishment of forum, at Provincial Government level to incorporate and coordinate the recommendations into policy formulation
• Continuation of experiences by all the thematic, sectoral and district RTs at annual based
• The frequency of RT meetings be at bi-annual basis to generate the interest of all stakeholders.
