Roundtable of Abbottabad Conservation Strategy

Objectives:

  • To enhance communication and coordination among various stakeholders thus creating an environment for moving towards sustainable development.
  • To act as an intellectual forum to debate, promote and further refine the Abbottabad Conservation Strategy (ACS)
  • To debate sectoral issues and constraints and identify interventions required for sustainable development;
  • To identify innovative financing mechanisms to foster sustainable development of key sectors in Abbottabad; and
  • To provide a forum for interface between the public sector and the civil society to debate and develop a consensus on issues of Environment and Sustainable Development;
  • To promote awareness and advocate for:
    • Controlling air and noise pollution
    • Solid Waste & Water Waste Management
    • Municipal issues;
    • Conservation of natural resources (forests, national parks, biodiversity, etc.)
    • Promoting environmental awareness

Major Achievements:

  • Stakeholders input into ACS document approved by the Zilla Council as Integrated Sustainable Development Vision
  • Linkage between TMA and Urban Union Councils
  • Anti-encroachment drive in Abbottabad city
  • Cleanliness campaign in one of the Urban Union Councils
  • Formal request to UNDP funded NEAP to design & execute Integrated SWM Programme for Abbottabad
  • Plantation around the solid waste disposal site at Salhad
  • Spring tree plantation through schools
  • Awareness and sensitization on enterprise development and credit programmes of ZTBL and SME Bank
  • Resolutions on encroachments and traffic hazards to the Zilla and Town Council on recommendations of the Roundtable

Constraints:

  • Lack of interest of members to attend meetings
  • Convening of meetings through members
  • Follow-up of decisions by the members
  • Broad mandate and the risk of spreading thinly
  • Secretariat and funding for sustainability

Way-ahead:

  • Institutionalization of the mechanism through establishment of secretariat within the district government for continuity of the mechanism
  • To monitor the ACS implementation through ACS Roundtable
  • To use the ACS RT as consultative forum for debate on development issues of the district
