The Sarhad Provincial Conservation Strategy aims to secure the economic, social and ecological well-being of the people of the NWFP through the conservation and sustainable development of the province’s natural resources.

Its specific objectives are:

• Treatment of the fundamental social problems that are the underlying cause of environmental degradation;
• Conservation, rehabilitation, and sustainable development of natural resources such as forests, water, soil and wildlife;
• Protect ion of the living environment from air, water and soil pollution;
• Development of high-quality environmental protection mechanisms including appropriate legislation, development planning mechanisms, environmental quality standards, and participatory and regulatory institutional arrangements;
• Improvement of the institutional and financial capacity of the NWFP Government to achieve sustainable development of the province’s natural resources;
• Protection and conservation of the cultural heritage of the NWFP;
• Improvement of community and individual involvement in decision making about natural resources and the environment; and
• Raising of public awareness and understanding of conservation and sustainable development.
